Atypical Depression - Understand Its Symptoms

Atypical Depression is perhaps the most common type of depression. Its main symptoms are different from the symptoms of severe depression. Now days there has been growing awareness about the symptoms of atypical depression. People who have atypical depression have more chance to getting the major depression. This type of depression also often occurs with panic disorder and may accompany with the problems like drug or alcohol abuse. Some of the symptoms of atypical depression include:
- The person, who suffering from atypical depression have depressed mood often lasts for years.
- It commonly started in teenagers
- It goes in cycles
- Energy level is also decreases and person thinks that he/she is unable to move. Sleep time is also increases and sometimes with trouble falling asleep as well.
- During the depressive phase, the depressed mood can also be lifted.
- Sleep time is also increases. Some time people also getting trouble while sleep.
- Appetite is also increases often for sweets, chocolates or carbohydrates.
- Increased emotional sensitivity to personal slights, criticisms, rejections.
It is not necessary that all symptoms have to be present. Doctors also investigate about the physical causes for any of these symptoms. For this they recommend blood tests for thyroid problems or for hormone levels. Atypical depression can also be exits with other diseases such as it can occur with hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroid hormone) which also has symptoms like depression and weight gain. Studies have also shown that atypical depression has been found in some people with adult-onset human growth hormone deficiency.
