Bipolar Disorder : Triggers And Risk Factors

According to research it is clear that, people who have family history of bipolar disorder are more prone to developing bipolar disorder. But this is not necessary in all the cases, however there are various external factors that plays an important role in developing bipolar disorder. These external risk factors are also known as triggers. These Triggers develop or worsen the case of existing depression. Sometimes it is difficult to find out the exact trigger of depression or it may occur without an obvious trigger.
Stress – Depression and mania also be occur due to severe stress or emotional trauma
The person suffering from stress has an extreme chance of developing bipolar mood episode and may worsen the existing depression condition and sometimes extend its duration.
Major Life Event – Episodes of bipolar disorder can also be trigger due to both good and bad life events. Sometimes sudden changes in life may trigger an episode of bipolar disorder.
Substance Abuse – Substance Abuse can also lead to an episode of depression and may worsen the course of disease. Cocaine, ecstasy, and amphetamines are the some types of drugs which can trigger mania however depression can be trigger due to alcohol and tranquilizers.
Medication – Some of the medicines and antidepressant drugs can trigger mania. Over-the-counter cold medicine, appetite suppressants, caffeine, corticosteroids, and thyroid medication may also cause mania.
Seasonal Changes - Seasonal Changes sometimes also results in episodes of mania and depression. During the summer manic episodes are more commonly occur, whereas in winter and spring, depressive episodes are more common.
Sleep Deprivation – Lack of sleep can also trigger an episode of mania.
