Research since a long time is being conducted as to what exactly causes depression. Many factors are responsible for this disorder and it is difficult to point towards one cause or reason. Genetic, biological or emotional factors are responsible for the depression that can happen to women, men or even teenagers.
Genetic factors
If you have a family history of depression and one or both or your parents were vulnerable to this problem, then you too are likely to be prone. This is attributed to your genes which were passed on to you by your parents. Adopted children followed the pattern of their biological parents only.
Biological factors
When affected by depression, the patients show imbalance in the levels of a certain chemical in the brain which is called neurotransmitter. It is responsible for conduction of nerve impulses. Serotonin, cortisol and norepinephrine are such neurotransmitters which are found in lower levels in depressed people. It is still under speculation whether it is the disorder that leads to lower levels or lower levels that lead to the disorder.
Environmental or emotional factors
In vulnerable people, happenings in their environment may trigger depression. Traumas and stress may lead to heightened anxiety levels and depression. Break up of important attachments, loss of loved one, physical conditions, pessimistic personality and other psychological disorders may also cause depression.
Depression has no single cause; often, it results from a combination of things. Things become worse when the all three factors contribute to the cause of depression.
