The meaning of depression is different for each person. Some people feel that depression is like a black curtain covering their lives. Other feel the lost of energy for concentrating anymore. In every part of the world, one can find the existence of unlimited cultures, languages, religions and people. Both depression and culture have a deep relation with each other. In today’s world, both affect the person deeply. There are various countries where you can correlate both depression and culture. Countries like UK, USA and India which have a multi cultural environment wherein people are having maximum level depression as compared to any other country.
It is true that the cultural disputes in a particular society are directly linked to the prevalence of depression. In western cultures, individuals are taken as autonomous entities and their achievements are related to them only. On contrary, in other cultures family or society are regarded as being the most important than the individual. Unfortunately, personal happiness is sacrificed for the well being of the family or nation. For example, the Asian cultures say that it is important for one member of a family to work in order to feed the other members of the family. This system can lead the person to fall into anxiety and depression. If a husband looses his wife or wife looses her husband, then both have to suffer from depression accordingly. Widower does not know how to work at home and care for children whereas widow does not know how to support her family financially. They both may feel them worthless and depressed if at any point of time they cannot fulfill the requirements and desires of their family.
