According to a recent research, now it is proved that there can be a link between symptoms of depression and cardiovascular trouble. The people are who suffering from depression shows physical symptoms like loss of appetite, lack of sleep etc. which can also result in the development of heart disease.
According to the findings of Mr. Jesse C. Stewart’s (assistant professor of the Department of Psychology at Indiana University - Purdue University) team, that physical symptom of depression have very harmful effects to the cardiovascular system, so it is important to identify the harmful effects of depression so that every important components are targeted with the treatment.
In the study, they also broke down the depression into physical and emotion symptom clusters and then they use this data to develop a psychological treatment for adults at risk for cardiovascular disease.
The study conducted by Professor Stewart’s team for three years carried the measurements of internal carotid artery thickness of 324 adults. According to this study “the thickening of the arteries over the years was linked to depressive symptoms”.
Professor Stewart also examines the possibility of a reduction in cardiovascular risks and hence heart diseases due to positive emotions like happiness or related factors like optimism. He also plans to investigate the link between hostility and depression.
