With the rise in depression cases, it is very important that this condition be treated. One should resort to this method only if the severity of the condition of depression has gone beyond the level where it can be dealt with just psychological sessions. There are many side effects of these depression drugs which are prescribed so the person should take them after getting themselves ready to bear these side effects.
These depression drugs are classified into three divisions:
• Tricyclic drugs (TCAs).
• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
• Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)
These drugs help the patient by increasing the amount of neurotransmitters in the brain to optimum levels which were otherwise reduced in people with depression. Reuptake of these transmitters is prevented by the drugs that are prescribed. With a balanced level of these chemicals, the normal condition can be somewhat restored in the person.
However with all these drugs available, it has been seen that they are effective in two thirds of the patients. The remaining one thirds did not show any improvement. Also another factor also cannot be ignored. These drugs fail to prevent the relapse of the depression in the treated people. This is because only the symptoms are being worked upon by the drugs but the cause still remains.
Through a treatment which includes both medication and psychological therapy, the symptoms and the cause both can be uprooted. Restoration of normal mental and physical health can then become easy for those under depression.
