The people suffering from depression are given care and concern which mostly pertains to doctors and medication. There is another way to deal with the problem and simpler too. Exercise is one of the best ways to get rid of problem of depression that affects people psychologically. Exercise is a healthier way which can help patients cope better with depression. With exercising as a part of routine, the journey of the suffering person to being completely healthy will not take very long.
Getting involved in exercise of any kind that a person can enjoy has far-reaching effects in improving the condition of depression and anxiety of mind. Not as a cure for depression but exercise works for the improvement of the complete state of mind which helps in coping up with the problem of depression better. Given below are ten reasons why exercise is a better approach for depression and will help patients cope better.
1. Builds confidence
Exercising involves a lot of aims and deadlines, however small they may be. Fulfilment of such goals helps in giving patients a satisfaction of accomplishment thereby giving a boost to the morale. As a result, there is increased confidence and self-worth which makes them feel better all the way and improves their state of mind to cope up with depression.
2. A distraction
A patient suffering from depression is bound to experience some negative thoughts that come to his mind. These may be regarding any aspect of his life or of his closed ones. In such a situation, exercising acts as a distraction for him which can pull away his mind to his own self, his body and the exercising that he puts his concentration into. All this helps in removing the dismal thoughts which come to his mind.
3. Increased social interaction
Depression often leads to solitude and isolation since the patients may suffer from negative thoughts and develop mistrust for people. Exercising can provide a better way to interact with new people. Activities like walking in the park, fitness sessions at a gymnasium or any other activity can again help the patients in mixing up with the society and making societal interaction a part of their life again.
4. Healthy coping
People suffering from the problem of depression tend to develop a negative outlook to almost everything that comes in their life. This is a big obstruction in the improvement of their mental health and therefore has to be removed. With exercising, the patients tend to develop a healthy and positive outlook since they are involved in something productive thereby improving their psychology.
5. Right transmission of energy
Anyone suffering from the problem of depression tends to go negative with thoughts and actions, even to the extent of complete isolation. By taking up exercise, it is almost assured that the energy which is spent in negative thoughts and actions can be used in a more positive manner by way of exercise. Rather in indulging in activities like heavy drinking and trying to feel better, it is always suggested to go in for something positive like exercise.
6. Increased sense of mastery
Since people take up exercise and take care of their body and fitness, there is an increased sense of mastery that develops in them. This is due to their control over their own body which gives them an increased self worth and also control over the thoughts that helps them in having better and positive thoughts.
7. Induces better sleep
It is a very common problem of people who suffer from depression that they face a lack of sleep. Insomnia tends to grip them and the main reason for this too is wandering thoughts which are negative and random. Exercise makes the body as well as mind tired due to the energy expenditure as well as use of mind in concentration. These factors give the patients a better sleep at night and help them wake up with fresh and better thoughts the next day.
8. Develops a positive approach
Negative thoughts almost seem like permanent in the minds of people suffering from depression. Negativity develops in them and can go to such extents that they remain totally isolated from the family and society. Through exercising, the mind inculcates healthy vibrations since the energy is used in the right manner. This thereby develops a positive approach for the life of the person making him emotionally more stable.
9. Increases self esteem
Self esteem and self worth are very important aspects if one wishes to live in a positive manner. Patients of depression however lack this feeling since their thoughts become negative. Exercising makes such people feel good about themselves and therefore improved their self worth helping them live respectfully.
10. No side effects
Even though if the medication is very specific and effective, there is no denying of the fact that they have side effects. These side effects can be short term or even long term effects that can harm the patient. Exercise however is something which certainly has no side effects. It will provide one with all the benefits like increasing confidence, self-worth, self esteem, positive thoughts, etc without having any side effects.
Exercising can have really far reaching effects if the people put in their efforts. Significant reductions in the depression level of patients have been seen just with the practise of physical activity. Also, for patients who are under medication, combining it with exercise also has highly outstanding benefits since both the antidepressants as well as a positive approach makes it work well for the people suffering from depression. Since a healthy body has a healthy mind, exercise can certainly prove to be a saviour in the times when a person is depressed and needs to overcome this vicious circle. Practising the same will help depression patients to a great extent.

There are lots of benefits to regular exercise. Unfortunately, the clinically depressed person has to fight their depression just to get up and get moving! If this can be overcome, then yes, a great boost will be felt after exercising. So that’s why routine will benefit the quest to help depression.
