While taking up medication to cure the problem of depression, you should first weigh all the benefits against the risks and only then decide as to whether they need medication if the problem is very severe. The antidepressants that are taken reduce the symptoms in up to seventy percent people and restore normal lifestyle for them.

Antidepressants act on the brain by directly affecting the brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemicals manage the balance between the emotional and physical state of the person. By blocking the re-absorption of these chemicals, their level in the brain can be increased which will in turn relieve the patient from depression.

It has however been known by research that depression medication just reduces the symptoms and it is not a cure for the problem. Up to ninety percent of the symptoms are reduced but until depression is totally cured, it is probable to recur. So what is suggested to the patients is to take up a treatment which includes both medication and psychotherapy hand in hand. This is because medicines can not cure the cause of depression which has to be worked upon psychologically.

Since there are many side effects for the medication, it is suggested by the doctors only if the condition is too severe to be treated by talk therapy alone. If the patient is ready to take on and bear the side effects of these medicines, only then should he decide to take up the way of medication to cure himself.
