Depression may occur in any form and due to any cause in people of all age groups. Vulnerability is more in females than males. However, males are four times more prone to committing suicide due to depression. So it is important that the depressive illness they are going through is treated.
The first step of treatment of depression is to go to the doctor. It is the doctor who will find out whether it is actually depression or any other physical condition like thyroid disorder which causes the same symptoms as depression. This can be found out by conducting a physical examinations and lab tests. If any medical condition is ruled out, then the patient is referred to a mental health professional.
A complete diagnostic evaluation is conducted so as to find out the cause of depression. Many factors like family history, genetic disorder, symptoms, severity, any history of treatment etc. once diagnosed, the patient of depression can be treated with a number of ways. Medication and psychotherapy are the common ones.
Antidepressants help the patients by acting and balancing the neurotransmitters in the brain. They can be taken by consulting a doctor. However, strict food habits have to be maintained and also, regularity has to be there so that the medicines are able to work on the patient. Talk therapy or psychotherapy also helps patients who have mild depressions. Some cases may also require a combination of medication and talk therapy to recover.
