When it seems like a black shadow is looming over your life, you may be experiencing depression. It happens to everyone now and then that they feel sad about something. But this feeling lasts for some days and passes. But when the feeling stays with you for over two weeks, beware! You may be suffering from depression.

There may be various causes for this depression to gave affected you. Moreover it is not just a state of mind. The problem or the pain that incurs on you starts to affects the normal functioning of your life. Causes may vary from individual to individual. They may postpartum blues which affect females after they give birth. Hormonal imbalances may also cause depression along with traumas and tragedies like death of loved ones. Family genetic history or physical conditions like heart disease, cancer, and HIV can contribute to depression, partly because of the physical weakness and stress they bring on.

Depression can affect anyone but its effects may vary on age and gender. Women are more likely to suffer from depression and this is usually attributed to the numerous hormonal changes that she is exposed to. Men also may be depressed but most of them do not go for any treatments and may try to mask it by taking to alcohol or drug abuse.

Most patients do not receive treatment though they respond well to medicines. Medical help should be sought in case of immediate serious crisis to get assistance and relief.
