Dysthymia : Yet Another Mood Disorder

Person suffering from dysthymia generally shows the signs like lack of enjoyment in the life. It is type of depression which is generally related to the mood disorder. Person suffering from dysthymia do its normal functioning but there is no enjoyment in the life. Dysthymia may continue for at least five to six months and may not respond to old medication and therapy of depression. Sometimes in stressful situation, the person suffering from dysthymia will goes into a major depression. This condition is known as double depression.

It is a chronic form of depression in which mood of the person remains consistently low.
Some of the alternative names of Dysthymia are Dysthymic disorder, Neurotic depression, Depression chronic, chronic depression. The exact causes of dysthymia are unknown but person suffering from dysthymia generally feels self-esteem, despair, and hopelessness.

Dysthymia generally occurs more in case of women as compare to men. Some of the symptoms of dysthymia are feelings of hopelessness, low and sad mood of the person, low self-esteem, poor appetite or overeating, poor concentration etc. there are various treatment options are available for dysthymia like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine (Prozac) are commonly used in the case of dysthymia. Therapy like cognitive/behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy are also very helpful in this case.

There are many side effects of antidepressant drugs which may cause more complication in the treatment like Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may cause stomach upset, mild insomnia, and reduced sex drive etc.
