SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder. SAD generally occurs with the change in season especially in winter season. People suffering from SAD feel unhappy, sad, lack of energy, increased need for sleep, tired, get weight gain, depression etc. People suffering from SAD also get problems in their work as well as in their personal relationship.
Symptoms of SAD generally started in fall, and automatically cure in the month of spring. During the winter season these symptoms of SAD are at the peak. Some people also have the periods of mania or depression in the season of spring and summer. If the symptoms are mild then there is no necessity of treatment as it automatically cures after certain period of time. On the basis of the severity of symptoms sometimes doctor also prescribe the mood stabilizers to treat SAD. Generally there is a small group of people who are suffering from summer depression.
SAD is also recognized as a subtype of major depressive episode. The symptoms of major depression generally involve decreased appetite, decreased sleep, weight loss etc. It has also been found that some people suffering from depression have increased sleep and appetite along with decreased energy. If the episodes of depression are severe, then individual might be diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.
